Seniors Face Growing Credit Card Debt

Posted by admin on Friday, 5 March, 2010

The burden of excessive credit card debt is a “new neighborhood” for thousands of senior citizens across the U.S. Low to middle income citizens are affected most, but even the upper middle class is taking on new debt.

Those who expected to spend their retirement years traveling and enjoying the fruits of their labors are now faced with a new reality. Those investments they made that were supposed to pay high dividends and allow them a comfortable lifestyle have tanked.

For some, it means a step downward in lifestyle in place of that luxurious retirement. For others it means going back into the workforce, if they can find a job. For others it means creating a form of self employment to subsidize Social Security income.

And for those with no place to turn to cut expenses or produce more income, it means growing credit card debt.

Those on a low fixed income have, of course, been hardest hit. When gasoline prices escalated and drove the price of all consumer goods into the stratosphere, those Social Security checks didn’t increase to meet the costs of every day necessities – such as food and heating fuel, which have seen the most dramatic increases in price.

Social Security Cost of Living Increases are based on the Consumer Price Index, and that index includes such items as housing, which has come down in value; and travel and recreation, which have seen drastic cuts in response to a drop in consumer spending.

Now gasoline prices have eased off a bit, but it is no surprise to anyone that food prices have not dropped. It may cost less than it did last year to ship merchandise to grocery stores, but no one is passing that savings back to the consumers.

Senior citizens are not turning to credit cards for luxuries. Instead they’re turning to credit cards for necessities. Medical care and prescription drugs top the list in spite of Medicare payments and other insurance policies. Over half the families surveyed said that medical expenses contributed to their credit card debt.

Is it any wonder? When a person brings in $600 per month and their medical bills eat up a third of it, something has to give. For many, it means putting groceries on a credit card.

From 2005 to 2008, citizens 65 and older increased their credit card debt by 26%. By comparison, consumers in the 35 to 64 age categories increased debt by 7% and consumers 18-34 increased by only 1%.

Credit Card Debt and How it Sneaks up on You

Posted by admin on Friday, 5 March, 2010

After a long weekend you find yourself spending a little more money than you planned for, but you couldn’t help it and you charge it to your credit card. You figure you can worry about it later and pay it off next month. Well months come and go, and you’re still in credit card debt- which is rapidly growing. How did this happen, and what can be done about it?

The biggest mistake people make about credit card debt is that they don’t take interest rates into consideration. Paying off a little every month isn’t going to reduce your credit card debt. Each month credit card companies charge you interest over the entire remaining unpaid balance. The amount left on your balance will determine the accruing interest and obviously, the sooner you pay it off the better. Making monthly payments that are above the minimum is step number one in protecting yourself against the stealthy credit card debt and will surely help keep your debt under control. Remember, creditors get their money from you being in over your head- late fees pile up and by paying only the minimum payments, you are only paying off the interest, not the actual debt.

Another point to look at is your budget. How well do you budget your money? Are you living paycheck to paycheck? Can you afford your current lifestyle? Do you frequently buy things you don’t need? All these questions can help you determine whether your budget fits you and your lifestyle. We all want nice things, but relying on credit cards to give us those things isn’t the way to go. If you find yourself paying for necessities like groceries in return for living in that “luxury” apartment, that’s a pretty good indicator you are not living within your means and need to either relocate or cut some of your other costs in order to lead a lifestyle more in your means.

When making a budget calculate your total income that you bring home, then subtract out housing, utilities, car payments, insurance, phone bills, etc. Take that number and subtract gas for your car, food expenses, and any other bills that you have. After all the bills are paid this is what you have left for luxury spending. Although, you should consider placing a percentage of that in a savings account. By using your savings to buy those wonderful luxury items, you can keep yourself out of credit card debt. It’s hard for those of us that have “Champagne taste on a beer budget’. But by saving for that amazing vacation and you won’t have to worry about all the bills piling up when you return and that is a great feeling.

Some changes you can make in your daily life to save money are to carpool to work. Also when you go to the grocery store have a list and your meals planned out to prevent compulsive purchasing. Consigning the clothes you no longer wear is also another way to get a little extra money.

If you find yourself in credit card debt, there are actions you can take to help get you out. You can get a second job, reallocate money in your budget, or if you have multiple credit card debt, you can consolidate your debt. By speaking with a debt counselor you can gain information and they can help you find the best solution to credit card debt.

Health, Beauty Free Tips — Achieving That Cover Girl Look

Posted by admin on Friday, 5 March, 2010

Ever look at a magazine and admire the makeup of your favorite model or movie star? While these celebrities usually travel with a health and beauty staff dedicated to making them look flawless, there are some things you can do to have the same flawless appearance.

Let’s take a look at some tips to make you movie-star beautiful and provide you with some health and beauty dollar savings:

1. Always start your makeup application with concealer. Concealer will hide a multitude of sins – under-eye circles, bags, and blemishes. When blending concealer around your eye area, use your ring finger. The skin around the eye is extremely delicate and using your ring finger makes it less likely to stretch the fragile skin.

2. Before you put on moisturizer, rub your hands together. When you rub your hands together, you warm them slightly which makes the moisturizer absorb into your skin better.

3. Want to have lipstick that lasts for hours. Start by applying your lipstick. Next brush a little loose power on your lips. Blot the powder and lipstick with tissue paper, and reapply the lipstick.

4. Suffering a recent outbreak of pimples? Add a little witch hazel to your foundation. It creates a medicated foundation for treatment of your acne symptoms.

5. Trying to save a little money on make-up? Instead of buying a contouring powder, purchase face powder a few shades darker than your skin tone, and be prepared to blend for a natural look.

6. The best mascara is the most expensive, right? Not at all. Most of the mascaras use similar formulations, and some of the make-up brands are made by the same company. For instance, Lancome and L’Oreal are the same company – just different product lines and packaging. Look for a good mascara that has lengthening and volumizing properties. 7. You don’t need a lot of makeup to look perfect. If your skin is good, use a few touches of concealer, blush, mascara and lip gloss, and set it all with a good loose powder. You’ll look simple and natural.

8. When applying lip gloss, put a small drop on the center of your lip, and gently spread it outwards. This avoids the appearance of too much, and gloppy lips.

9. Make sure you use eye shadow correctly. Darker colors should go towards the outer corner of the eye to make the eye appear open and larger. Use a soft, natural shade towards the inside of your eye (close to the nose area).

Let’s face it, we’re all love to play with health and beauty products. But sometimes, a little makeup goes a long way. While it’s tempting to throw everything on, it just makes you look too made-up. The best health beauty free approach is to go for a natural appearance. You want people to look at you, not your makeup.
